Colour and texture in microcement: from soft pastels to rugged quartz

The right colour transforms a room. A microcement floor or wall is not simply a surface. It is the foundation of your interior. That is why every project begins with a careful colour selection, tailored to your preferences and the light conditions of the space. Combined with the right texture, that choice defines the character of the finished result.

Colour systems and pigments

We work with RAL and NCS colour fans, making it straightforward to find the perfect shade for your space. RAL is the most commonly used system in construction and offers a broad range from neutral to expressive tones. NCS is based on how the human eye perceives colour and delivers particularly accurate results when matching existing interior elements.

Systems such as Little Greene, Farrow & Ball and other premium tinting ranges are also available. These brands are known for their complex colour recipes, using multiple pigments per shade. That produces subtle depth and variation that is rarely achievable in mass production.

Using natural pigments, we fine-tune intensity with precision. A colour can look different in microcement than on a paint swatch. That is because microcement is built up in multiple thin layers, with each layer allowing light to pass through slightly. The result is an organic colour effect with more depth than a flat coat of paint. For that reason, we always recommend creating a test area so you can assess the colour in the actual lighting conditions of your space.

Four grades of microcement

Beyond colour, texture defines the character of your floor or wall. We offer four grades of microcement, each with its own grain size and visual effect.

Smooth

Smooth is the finest variant: a highly refined, homogeneous finish with no visible quartz granules. This grade is ideally suited to walls and is popular in sleek, modern interiors where calm and simplicity are central. On floors, smooth offers a serene appearance, though keep in mind that imperfections in the substrate are more visible.

Medium

Medium offers a gentle, subtle texture that remains calm and even. This is our most popular grade for floors. The minimal grain structure conceals small imperfections and gives the surface just enough life to feel authentic. Medium is versatile: it suits both rustic and contemporary interiors.

Coarse

Coarse contains quartz granules for a natural, lively appearance. This grade shows more movement in the surface and creates a character reminiscent of natural stone or ground concrete. Coarse is particularly suited to living rooms and commercial spaces where a robust look is desired.

Base XT

Base XT, also with quartz granules, delivers an even more robust, characterful structure. The coarser grain makes the surface tactile and expressive. Base XT is often used in industrial interiors, lofts and commercial premises where texture is a deliberate design choice.

The handfloated technique

Our preferred method is the handfloated technique. Microcement is applied with a French knife and finished with a plastic trowel. By varying the pressure, angle and speed of the trowel, we create a hand-trowelled look that echoes the beauty of natural stone.

The difference with mechanically finished floors is immediately visible. Standard finishes often leave half-moon marks, repeating arc patterns that reveal the surface has been worked by machine. With the handfloated technique, every section is unique. The patterning flows organically from one zone to the next, without repetition.

This requires more time and experience than standard application. Every square metre demands attention and patience. But the result speaks for itself: a surface that looks as if it has always been there.

A bespoke process

Whether you choose a soft pastel or a deep, saturated tone, a serene smooth finish or a rugged quartz-rich texture, we tailor every detail to your space. The process begins with a colour consultation, where we explore the options together. We then create a test area in the chosen colour and grade, so you can evaluate the result before the final work begins.

That care continues throughout the entire process. Every layer is built up by hand, inspected and only followed by the next after approval. The result is a floor or wall that is refined, unique and perfectly matched to your interior.
