About Microcement

Microcement in Nijmegen

Nijmegen has two thousand years of building history. From Roman foundations to post-war reconstruction, from the steep lanes of the Benedenstad to the creative repurposing of the Honig complex. It is a city that knows how to combine old and new without friction.

Microcement does exactly that. It respects the existing structure and adds something contemporary. In a renovated property in the Benedenstad, a microcement floor flows seamlessly over the original subfloor. In a modern apartment on the Waalkade, it amplifies the expansive view over the river.

Nijmegen is experiencing a renovation wave. In Bottendaal, around the Kronenburgerpark and in the redeveloped Waalfront district, more and more owners are choosing materials that combine performance with appearance. Microcement offers that. It is waterproof, scratch-resistant and just 2-4 mm thin. Over tiles, over concrete, over existing floors. No demolition needed.

The floor, wall or bathroom is seamlessly finished in the colour and texture that suits your interior. From industrial raw to silky smooth.

About Coated Surfaces

Discipline As Foundation

Coated Surfaces grew out of a world where precision isn't negotiable. Founder Pom spent years as a professional dancer at Cirque du Soleil. Every night the same movement, down to the millimetre. That might sound far from floors and walls, but it's the opposite.

Microcement demands exactly that same control. Timing, feel, precision. The difference between a good floor and an exceptional one comes down to millimetres. We take the time it needs. No rushing, no half measures. Just lasting surfaces that bring calm to a space.

Applications

Microcement applications in Nijmegen

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, and you notice it in the building stock. From medieval cellars in the Benedenstad to post-war apartments and the clean new-builds on the Waalfront - every neighbourhood requires a different approach. Microcement, also known as concrete plaster or betonstuc, suits all of these contexts. It delivers a raw, industrial aesthetic but feels smooth and warm underfoot.

In the Honig complex and the creative buildings around Bottendaal, there is strong demand for that bold concrete look. Floors that appear to belong to the building, not something laid on top afterwards. Forcrete microcement achieves exactly that effect: from industrial rough to silky smooth, depending on the finishing coat we select.

When renovating older properties in the city centre, the key advantage is that no demolition is needed. Microcement goes over existing tiles, natural stone or screed. The build-up is 2-3 millimetres - doors still fit, staircases need no adjustment. We work across Gelderland, from Nijmegen to Arnhem and everywhere in between. Every square metre is applied by us personally, by hand.

What clientssay

We are incredibly happy with our new floor. Pom is a true craftsman. Highly recommended!

Ila Luijten

Pom gave our bathroom a complete makeover. The walls with beton cire and the floor with microcement. The end result is calm and modern. Very satisfied with Pom's expertise, his way of working, and the final result.

Martijn van Wijk

Our kitchen and living room have been completely transformed. The seamless transition between the spaces makes everything feel so spacious. Pom really thinks along with you and delivers top quality.

Why Coated Surfaces

Why microcement in Nijmegen?

Nijmegen deserves craftsmanship that matches its history. Not rushed, not superficial, but thoughtful and lasting. As a certified Forcrete installer, we apply microcement that endures for decades. Every layer is built up by hand, with the precision the material demands. In the Benedenstad and around the Honig complex I see wonderful projects where old and new come together. Microcement fits that narrative: it is an artisanal technique that delivers a modern appearance without denying what already exists.

In Bottendaal I work in the characteristic townhouses where residents want to preserve character but add comfort. At the Waalfront, modern apartments have appeared in recent years that call for a finish to match. We work in Nijmegen, Arnhem, and throughout the Gelderland region. I enjoy driving that way because the projects there have something special about them. Get in touch for a no-obligation conversation about your project.

Process

How does a microcement project work in Nijmegen?

Nijmegen has a distinctive mix of building styles and you notice that in every project. In the Benedenstad I sometimes work in properties with thick walls and irregular floors - thorough preparation is crucial there. At the Honig complex it is the large open spaces with concrete substrates where microcement comes into its own immediately. I always begin with a home visit to assess the substrate and choose the colour together. After that you receive a quotation without fine print. I schedule the execution in blocks of multiple days so I can work efficiently in the Gelderland region. The build-up is layer by layer: primer, base coats, finishing coats, sealer. In older properties in Bottendaal I pay extra attention to adhesion on existing substrates. With new-builds at the Waalfront that goes faster. Every project is different, but the result is the same: a surface that suits Nijmegen. Solid, honest, built to last.
